With her jibboom carried away and bearing other traces of a battle with the elements, the New Zealand barque Helen Dennv was towed into Sydney Harbor on Tuesday of last week. The Helen Dennv was from Wellington, via Havelock. with 490,000 ft of white pine. The barque met a southerly gale of terrific fury on the 16th ult, and for three days she had a trying time, bat-1 tling with fierce squalls and high seas. During one of the squalls about 10ft of the jibboom carried away. The vessel was hove to, and the seas pounded away at her throughout the gale, keeping the decks in a chronic state of Hood, but fortunately doing no further damage. One of the crew, a seaman named H. Ball, belonging to Sydney, had a narrow escape from drowning during the gale. He was engaged with other members of the crew fixing a fore stay, when suddenly the barque gave a heavy lurch and he was thrown overboard. Clad in his oilskins, with a big sea running, the sailor was in a bad way. He, however, is a powerful swimmer, and. divesting himself of his oilskin* in the water, managed to secure a lifebuoy which was thrown from the vessel, and ten minues later was hauled on board none the worse for his perilous experience. After the weather moderated the barquo ran I into light winds and fine weather, which I continued to the Heads.
