Broetter's schooner was carrying a crew of four Europeans and twenty natives, and wis engaged in exploring north-west of Friedrich Willielmshaven. llroetter and another European were examining a river when they were, surrounded by natives. Broetter was fatally speared. His companion escaped by floating down the river on a log, but found that the schooner had disappeared. It is feared Hie vessel foundered in a storm with all hands. The Cernian authorities despatched a punitive expedition to the scene of the murder.
