DENSITY OF POPULATION.

As the work of the statistician progresses the _ returns ot the census taken last April continue to provide matter for consideration (snvs the Wellington Times). Certain details of the density of population are now available. The net figures show that the number of persons to the square mile in New Zealand has increased bv a little more than one since -1800 (from 8.540 to 9.690). In the different provinces, the greatest gain has been in Taranaki, and the smallest in Marlborough and Westland. The growth of the dairying industry is no doubt largely responsible for Taranaki's advance from d 3.11,!) to 15.589 persons to the square mile, and the same factor helps to explain why the Wellington province (the most populous in the Dominion) has now 18.094 against 16.347 in MOfi, and how it is that the Auckland province has an addition of two to the square mile, (from 8.204 to 10.274). Since the land has been to some extent freed from the grasp of the larger owners great quantities of butter and cheese have been produced in these three districts, giving material evidence of the value of closer settlement and justifying the expenditure of public money.
