The news that the engine-drivers were joining the strike caused satisfaction to the miners. Business places in the Lyell district are closing, and all who can do so are migrating. The Engine-drivers' and Firemen's Association has notified the Mt. Lyell Company that unless the terms of the arbitration award are conceded and the dismissed man reinstated they will cease work to-morrow.
MINE ENGINEERS THREATEN TO STRIKE. Received 3, 1 a.m. Melbourne, October 2. The engineers employed in the State coal mine have demanded an increase of Is 8d per shift. Failing compliance they threaten drastic action. SHIPOWNERS DISPLEASED. London, October 1. Several leading firms of shipowners are withdrawing from the Cardiff Association owing to the surrender to the seamen's demands in July. BREAD RIOTS IN DUBLIN. London, October 1. Serious break riots have occurred at Dublin. Vans were attacked and overturned ami the contents' distributed to starving women and children. The Creat Southern Company offers to reinstate all locomotive men, also the great majority of others. If the offer is not accepted the company will engage further new men. TEXTILE WORKERS FEDERATE. Received 2, 0.35 p.m. London, October 2. A conference of Lancashire textile workers at Huddersfield decided to federate, with a view to common action. The strikers' conference protested against the formation of a volunteer police force at St. Gaudens.
