A London cable reports the death of bir John Brig™,. iLiWeral member for lorkshire, West riding, at the age of t i years. A London cable states that Sir Charles Lucas, who paid n visit to the. colonies .last year, has retired from the Colonial Office. Dr. L. Fraser Hnrst. acting-medical superintendent at the Waihi Hospital, has been appointed superintendent of the \\ liiingnrei Hospital. There were sixteen apphoai ions for the position. •Mr. A. Mfirton was yesterdav reelected chairman of the Mangorei Dairy Co. for the seventeenth year in succession. Mr. Morton has held the position of chairman to the company since its inception.
Jlr. Alexander MacDougall, an old resident of Wellington, died 011 Saturday morning, aged sixty-nine years. He tooic a pi 0111 in out part in the development of West Coast coalfields. Mr. MaeDou«all was born at Loclimaddy, liwernesshire and arrived in Xew Zealand in 187!). Settling in Wellington, he became manaser of the Oar Meat Company, a positiou'lie subsequently relinquished to go in for land dealing.
The death occurred at lnglew»od at a kite hour last evening of Mr Alexander fiow, M.A., assistant master nt the looal .school. Deceased was but 31 years of age, and had been ill only three -weeks. On Saturday a consultation of doctors was held, and, as a result, Br. Wylie operated, but from the first it was seen- that the case was a hopeless one. The late Mr. Gow was a highly successful teacher, and his untimely end will be deplored bv a lar-«e circle of friends. He was married to the only daughter of Mr. D. IT. of Inglewood, and leaves her and an infant son.
Mr.'Alfred Crook. S.M.. who is relieving Mr. Fitzherbert, S.M., in the Xew Plymouth' Court district, is a graduate of the Oxford University, ami before his appointment to the 'Bench practised for many years as a solicitor 011 the southern goldfields. The son oE an {English brewer, he inherited a fortune on his father's death a few years ftgo, and soon afterwards came in for a large windfall on the death of a wealthy relative by marriage in the Dominion. He had. decided on retiring from the practice of his profession, when he was offered his present position, -and, having; been a strong Conservative in politics, his appointment gave rise to some discussion and was strongly condemned in Liberal circles. He is, however, a sound lawyer, and -a man of clear judgment; and rigidly impartial mind.—'VVaimate Witness.
Last evening, at the Holland Hall, Mr. W. E. Jones, on behalf of the Hibernian Society aiul members of the Oatholio congregation, was the recipient of a travelling portmanteau and silver cigarette case, toolh suitably engraved, also a silver-mounted cigarette holder. Mr. George Grey, past president of the society, made the presentation, and in a; neat speech reviewed the boyhood of thci departing member and prophesied a success career in his profession, Mr. Jonott was ttlso the recipient during the day of a pair of military brushes from tho stall' of Messrs. Malone, Anderson and Johnstone, -with which firm he has been associated, Mr. Jones leaves by Wednesday's express to join the legal firm of Anthony and Russell, Cliristehurch, ami carries with him the. best wishes of a .large number of friends for his future prosperity.
