THE -SCHOOLS- COMPETITION. Mr. 10. Whittle formally Inuided o-ver J, to the association- the shield donated bv ( liim during last svsikou for I lie school's competition, lie had for many years appealed for .support of school cricket., and >. promised a shield. When he learned last I year that a school competition was being I initiated he immediately had this shield | prepared. He hoped that it would be I the means of .bringing on a number ofl

young cricketers. The president then presented the shield, on behalf of the association, to Mr. Ryder, delegate of the High School Chib. He .trusted that the High School team would do its best to hold the shield for another year, and produce a good crop of young cricketers. IMr. Ryder, in receiving the shield, thanked Mr. Whittle for the keen interest he had winced in encouraging cricket amongst the schooli)>oys. It had already had the desired effect. Before the competition started they usually had al»ut twelve boys at the practice nets. Now l there were about 44, and there would be still more this- season. 'Hie High School boye were very keen on keeping the oup. It was intended to enter two teams in the association's junior competition, and perhaps a third, and to enter teams -beyond those for the schools competition. He admired the way in which the primary schools played the game last season against the only secondary team, which, of course, had bigger boys. The. West End team was a very fine team, and would hold its own against any primary team that he had seen play. He mentioned that the High Schol team was not composed of the biggest and best cricketers. They had had a. team in the Thursday competition, and two in the schools contest, and the third team won this shield. He would like to see some country schools competing. Mr. Whittle suggested the necessity for grading the High School players, hut Mr. ißyder said: that, as in the past season, the 'boys were anxious to make the competition a close one, and they could be depended on not to take any advantage.

It -was decided to institute an annual competition amongst the public schools for the shield, which would be known as the North Taranaki Cricket Association's Challenge Shield. It was decided to affiliate the competing school clubs free, and bo ask each school entering a team to nominate a delegate to a management committee for the competition. GENERAL. The United Service Club's delegate asked for a better practice wicket for his club this season.

Owing to the required notice not having l)ce.n given the consideration of the draft rules could not be taken. The secretary was empowered to have copies of the rules typewritten and circulated amongst the clubs for discussion, the association to hold a special meeting in a fortnight's time to adopt them. The secretary announced that entries for the association's competitions would close on October 14.
