LONDON MARKETS. Isv Cable—Press Association—-Copyright, London, September 27. Tal*ow.—At the wiles 1588 casks were offered and 781 sold. Mutton, tine 38s (id. medium 355; beef, line 3>6s 3d, medium 335. At the wool sales there was stronger competition. Prices were very firm, with un occasional hardening tendency. AMERICAN WHEAT. London, September 27. The visible American supply of wheat is 04,073,000 bushels. THE WOOL SAI.ES. By Telegraph—Pre6s Association. Wellington, Thursday. The High Commissioner, under date September 27, reports: —The wool sales have commenced and there is « large attendance of buyers, with good competition. The Americans are holding off. Merino and fine crossbreds arc at par to r> percent, lower, medium crossbred V/» per cent, lower, coarse crossbred par to 5 per cent, lower, slipes 5 per cent, to V/-> per cemt. lower, scoured par to !> per cent lower. Sixty-four thousand bales of New Zealand wool arc catalogued. Dalgcty & Co., Ltd., Wellington, have received cable advice, dated the 2<Gth iust.. from their London Office, reading as follows:—Wool has opened. The attendance of buyers is large, and competition is animated, but the selection of wools is indifferent. Merino Wools.—Good quality and condition, par to ■"> per cent., also inferior and faulty 5 per cent, to 10 per cent, lower, as compared with the closing rates of last series. Faulty short scoured wools. 10 per cent, lower, and are negleeted. Crossbreds are 5 per cent, lower.
LOAN & MERCANTILE CO.'S REPORT. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. (Stratford branch) report: — We held our usual monthly sale at Te Wera on Friday, 2nd inst., when there were about 00 cattle yarded. There was a fair attendance, but the quality of the stock was not up to the usual, and as a eonseqneneve bidding was slow, and only about half of the stock yarded was sold. Mixed yearlings realised 40s, empty heifers up to 77s (id, springing heifers, backward and small, from 70s to 100s. On Saturday, 23rd inst., we held our lirot springing heifer sale in our Stratford yards. There were 50 heifers yarded, 3f> of which were sold at from 103s to 147s Cd. The quality of the stock was not nearly so good a* usual, as they were in low condition and somewhat backward, but bidding was fairly good. There was a fairly large attendance., altout 00 fanners being present.
In our Stratford yards on Tuesday, 20th inst., we held our usual fortnightly I sale, when there was a large yarding of) USD head of cattle, a large number of I which were yearling steers and heifers, besides a line of hoggets. Although we had several outside buyers, bidding was slower than usual, and.the greater pro- j portion of the cattle were passed in, as owners' reserves were somewhat higher than buyers' ideas of values. The following prices' were realised:—Yearling heiifers 38s (id to 538, 12 to 15-months steers 38s fid to 00s, empty 2-year-old heifers fids to 70s, store cows 51s to 77s Gd, bulls 48s fid to 77s (id, dairy cows •105s to 100s, dairv heifers, backward and small. 105s to 127s fid. The line of hoggets, which were a nice lot, realised 13s Id. During the last week we placed privately a considerable number of store eows, empty heifers and yearling steers to outside clients, and we have several enquiries for both yearling and 2-year-old heifers (empty) and yearling steers of good quality. *
WEBSTER BROS.' REPORT. ■'Messrs. Webster Bros, report as follows: Poultry.—At the mart on Saturday we had an extra heavy entry of all classes of poultry, prices realised showing an advance on our last week's list. We quote: Hens, old Is Sd to Is Mil, young Is lid to "2s 7d; cockerels, Is idd to 2s fid; ducks. -2s lid to 2s 7d; drakes, 2s 7d; pure-hred black Minorca hens 3s 3d; purc-hrcd Silver Wyandotte liens, 3s Od; Turkcv gobblers, 7s to 8s; Turkey hens. 4s to'4s 3d; ducklings, Sd to according to «go. The usual line of auction shrubs, sheltrens, etc., were disposed of ut satisfactory prices. Furniture. —On Tuesday, on account of the estate of the late Mrs. Thomas King, we held a clearing sale of all her household furniture and ell'ccts, bidding was spirited throughout, and prices realised were very satisfactory. On Wednesday, in the Good Templars' Hall, we held a clearing sale on account of the executors of the late Mr. T. P. Brooking, when the furniture and effects offered met with good demand.
Stock.—On .Friday last, at our Oakura yards, we held our usual monthly s«lc, and bidding throughout was spirited, there being a large attendance of buyers ami the public. Fruit.—During the week this has been in fair supply, on account of the Island steamer arriving with a largo cargo of oranges and bananas. We quote: Bananas, green IDs to lis, ripe '2 [ /-A lb.; oranges, originals lis, repacks 14s to 14s lid; mandarins, l"2s (>d; lemons, fti; cooking apples.
