PRESIDENT TAFT PHILOSOPHIC. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright New York, September 24. Mr. Taft, .speaking at St. Louis, said he was content to abide by the result of the Canadian elections. He regretted the failure to pass the reciprocity proposals, but he had been long enough on the bench to know when a final decision was given. Congressman MrColl, the introducer of the original Reciprocity Bill, declares that the puerile annexation bogey led Canada to reject as golden an opportunity as it was likely to have. SIR WILFRID LAURIER NOT TO RETIRE YET.

NEW PREMIER'S MANIFESTO.

Sir Wilfrid La.uricr has revised his decision to retire from politics, and has announced that he will remain with his party for some time. He is now making precautions to -quit office immediately. Mr. Borden states that thirty years hence the people of Canada will look back to this election as the turning point of its destiny. The Conservatives would endeavor to build up Canada as an autonomous nation within the Empire. He expected that the deferred elections would result in further .defeats of the Liberals. Lord Charles Beresford, interviewed at Vancouver, congratulated Canadians on the results of the elections. , He alluded to the effect on trade of the opening of the Panama. Canal, and said that questions of strategy were affected as the trade routes of the world altered. He should like to see the English-speak-ing nations so strong as to be able to command the peace of the world without other alliance. He regarded the (Jriental awakening and the cheap labor "of Eastern countries as certain to menace the future of all industrial nations.

CHICAGO WHEAT MARKET.

New York, September 24.

The Chicago wheat market has completely recovered its stability, which was affected by the defeat of the reciprocity proposals.

Air. W. A. Beddoe, Trade Commissioner for Canada, Interviewed on the subject of the defeat of the Laurier Government, said as the election was probably fought on, the question of reciprocity with the United States the Coriservativc victory must mean that the reciprocity proposals will be killed, as it was requisite that the agreement should be approved by the' Parliaments of the United States and Canada. Mr. Beddoe said the change in party would not involve a change, of Canada's Trade Commissioner in New Zealand. As to the effect of the change respecting reciprocity Mr. Beddoe said had the agreement been carried all the natural products of our country, which were the same as those to be admitted to Canada from the United States free, would also have gone in free.
