INDIGNANT WHALERS
PROTEST AGAINST NORWEGIAN COMPETITION. Auckland, September 20. The Auckland-owned whaler llunanui, which arrived in port this afternoon, has just completed a profitable cruise. She left 111 till' on January 15, and got her first whale on March 30. Tier total catch was twelve whales, which yielded one hundred tons of oil. Speaking to a reporter, the captain expressed the opinion that Ihev did not receive from the Government that amount of encouragement which might reasonably have been expected. "Tt does not seem right," he declared. "I hat the Government should encourage Norwegian whalers in these waters, considering Unit our company represents all New Zealand capital, having expended £20,000 in providing plant on flic Campbell Island station. We also employ an auxiliary schooner to carry coal to* the steamer and bring back products from the factory. We are compelled to man our ships according to the New Zealand scale, and pay New Zealand wages, but foreigners are allowed to ignore the New Zealand shipping laws altogether, though Altering into competition with us. We want New Zealand owners protected a«ainst foreign competition, as is the easo in every part of the British Empire, and notably in Canada and Newfoundland."
