DISTRICT NEWS.

VAREA. (From Our Own Correspondent). A farewell social was tendered Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Julian, our local storekeepers (who have left the district) 011 Thursday night last. The weather was not very fine, but in spite of this there wa.s a good attendance. During the evening several songs were rendered. An excellent supper, provided by the ladies, was handed round. Afterwards, Mr. James Simpson, 011 behalf of the settlers of the district, spoke a few words, and presented Mr. Julian with a beautiful gold Albert chain and Mrs. Julian with a lovely bracelet. Mr. Julian, who was taken by surprise, suitably replied. Rev. C. Addcnbrooke referred to the lass they would be to the district and to the church. "For they are jolly good fellows," was sung, and three loud cheers were given. Dancing was kept up till an early hour, the music being supplied by local musicians. Mr. W. Thornell acted as M.C. A matter that has hen causing a considerable amount of interest is the loss of Mr. McDonald's purebred Ayrshire bull, which suddenly disappeared from his paddock near the hall about a fortnight ago. The animal was seen in the paddock at dusk 011 Sunday evening, but on Monday morning it had gone, but no trace of it has yet been found. l Mr. McDonald lias been all round the fences, and there is 110 place where it could get out without it being seen, and the only conclusion people can come to is that an airship must have passed #Ter through the night, picked the animal up and carried it away! I might | also mention that a cow belonging to I Mr. S. Wells disappeared almost as suddenly some two months ago and has 1 not been seen or heard of since.

The milk supply at the local factoryis on the increase. It will not be long now to wait before we will again be cart-' ing whey from the factory, as cheesemaking will commence on October 1. Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Julian and family left 011 Wednesday morning for New Plymouth, where, I understand, they intend staying for a short time. All of our local lads under the age of twenty-one had to pay Dr. Home a visit last week at Puniho to he examined in connection with the military training system.
