RAILWAYS AND BRIDGES
COLD COMPORT FROM A MINISTER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation of members of the Featherston County Council and Martinborough Town Board was introduced by Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.P., to the Minister of Public Works on Saturday afternoon. The object was to ask that thtt l'eatherston to Martinborough railway be 1 ' included in the Railways Authorisation Bill, which it was understood would be laid before Parliament this session. Assistance was also asked from the Government for completion of a bridge which was the main outlet for Martinborough. ' Th» Minister replied that the Government was strictly limited as to the amount of money available for railway construction. He realised that the district was an excellent one and capable of great dcvelppment, but doubted wry much whether if any branch railways would be authorised this session. The matter would be placed before Cabinet, and it would receive the same consideration as others. The bridge question wn» settled long ago. The district insisted in lengthening the bridge and addiiwf to the cost to an extent which the Government regarded as unnecessary. It they wanted luxuries they must pay for them. They could spend as much money as they liked, but would get no more 'from the Government.
