TOLL-IiATES COM MISSTON. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hawera, Saturday. The Toll-gate Commission's report concerning the Hawera and Waimate West County Councils, finds that toll-gates' cannot legally be abolished, that tho, charges were not excessive, and estimates that Wainiate should pay Hawera £582 annually. THE CIVIL SERVICE. Wellington, Saturday. Several matters affecting the Civil Service were brought Under the notice of tho Premier to-day, when a deputation urged th« bringing into operation of the classification scheme, also that tho Superannuation Act should be amended so as to give a widow of a civil servant ei right to take <in annuity of £lB or compensation in tho usual way, and that tlie amount of compensation should be protected from creditors. Sir Joseph Ward said lie had received tho classification scheme and proposed to lay it before Parliament. Increases of salaries would appear on the Supplementary Estimates, and the classification would bo held over until all appeals were- received. Probably it would not bo dealt with until next session. As to superannuation, if the rights of widows had not been conserved he. would have necessary amendments made, but he. did not know if they could legislate about the obligations of a deceased.
