ALLEGED SMUGGLING. Wellington, Thursday. When the cases of Minister of Customs v. Australian Kodak Co., a claim for £20,040 penalty for alleged evasion of Customs duty, and the same plaintiff v. Harold Anthony Beauchamp for a like sum, on the same allegation, were called before Air. Justice Edwards to-day, the Solicitor-General stated that the action had ibcen settled. The defendant company had paid £SOOO penalty, together with £ 1000 to cover costs and unpaid duty.
ESCAPE OF ANOTHER PRISONER. Gisbome, Thursday. Alfred Burnecle, alias Pearce, alias Barnicle, who was convicted of assault and robbery in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, and was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment and thereafter to four years' detention for reformative treatment, escaped from the new Gis■borne Gaol at 11 o'clock this morning, scaling the prison wall when the warder's attention was diverted for a few minutes. A force of police who were taken from attendance at the Supreme Court are now out scouring Uh? country for him.
