HIGH SCHOOL BOARD
1 MOXTIIIA' MEETIXO. The monthly meeting of the New Plymouth High School Board of Governors was held on Wcdiie.-da-y afternoon Present: Messrs. X. K. MacDiarmid (in the ehair), S. Percy Smith, E. Doekrill, 11. Eyre Kenny, D. Hntchen. and Dr. Fookesi An apology was received from Mr. M. Eraser.
THE IXSPEI'TOR-fIEXERAL'S SUfiCESTIOXS. Mr. E. Pridham, in reply to the Board's enijuiry as to what he had done to carry out the suggestions made by the fnspector-(Jeneral after his last visit to the school, reported that he had remodelled the time-table. He had taken the fifth form Latin himself, as he advised, and he had redistributed the subjects amongst the teachers so that, as far as possible, each teacher should be responsible for an entire subject instead of tho various branches of a subject being entrusted to more than one teacher. This latter course he had adopted in deference to the Board's wish that Mr. Hogbcn's proposals should be carried out, but he did not believe that the chance would result in an increased efficiency.
PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS. 'GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE REFUSED. iMr. Bewley. secretary, read copy of a letter Which had been addressed by the chairman 1 to the Minister of Education, . expressing the regret of the Board that they were unable to interview him at Stratford on his invitation, owing to the pressure of their own j business. Therefore they were obliged to place in writing the subjects they wished to discuss with him. " For some years past the. Board has been anxious in the interest of the school to make some alterations in the following direction: Ist, To separate entirely the girls' side from the boys' side; 2nd, to erect a building as a boys' boarding-house. With reference to the first, this can only be done by erecting another buildin;.', for which there i.s ample room on the'sehool estate, but though the board has endeavored to carry on the school with the utmost economy we have not so far been able to accumulate sufficient capital'to justify us in proceeding with the erection of a proper building. And with regard to (lie second scheme, the Board is met with the same difficulty. In order to test the question as to whether sufficient inducement exists for such an establishment, the Board has for twelve months rented a. house adjacent to the schools, and placed it under the direction of one of the masters. This establishment has been so far successful, and the board feels warranted now in endeavoring to provide a more suitable building to accommodate a larger number of boarders; the present number is fourteen. This 'is the more necessary as the Board's- tenure of the present building is liable to be terminated at any moment. It is proposed to accomplish this object by adding to the principal's residence a sufficiency of accommodation for boarders and staff to meet the extended demand which is anticipated. The estimated cost of these additions is about IMGOO. Towards tin's the Board can finance the sum of £IOOO. I and it now asks you whether the Education Department, under your direction, will be willing to [dace on the estimates a sufficient sum to raise what is deficient, i.e.. £2OOO. If your reply is in the affirmative the Board will at once have plans prepared to submit to the department." The Secretary for Education, under date August .11. wrote that the Minister regretted his inability to make the proposed contribution towards additional buildings. The provision of a boarding-house, which was no doubt very '.lesir-ahle, could, it is believed, be accomplished bv an expenditure on the headmaster's .house, which .the Board it>. self should be able to finance.. The proposed separation of the boys' and girls' senools did not appear to be such a ; necessity as to require a vote of Parliament.
'Member* expressed their disappointment at the Minister's letter. Tt was decided to allow the. matter to stand over for the time being. ■ MISCELLANEOUS.
