| FAMOUS AUTHOR AND EXPLORER. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright London, September 17. Mr. Edward Whymper, F.RJS.E., the well-known author and explorer, is dead. / Mr. Edward VVhymper was born in 1840 and was educated at Clarendon House School. He obtained considerable reputation as a mountaineer in early life. He ascended Mount Pelvoux in 1881, and the Point des Ecrins (the latter is the highest point in the French Alps) in 18tM, and the Mattcrhorn (14,780 ft) in 1865; visited Greenland in 1807-1782, explored and ascended the Great. Andes (Ecuador) in 1870-80; travelled in Canada in 1001-08, exploring the neighborhood of the "Great Divide." Mr. Whymper was a Fellow and Patron'e Medallist of the Royal Geographical Society of Paris, an honorary member of the Geographical Society of Paris, of the French, Swiss and Italian Clubs, and of the Sierra, Appalanchian, Canadian, Rocky Mountain and New York clubs. He was also a Knight of St. Maurice and St. Lazare. His publications are '•Scrambles Amongst the Alps," in the years MtHWJI, 1871; "How to Use the Aneroid Harometer," "Travels Amongst the Great Andes of the Equator, 1892" "Chamonix and Mount Blanc," and "Zetmatt and the Matterhorn."
