Dear food rioters, armed with scythes, marched in the Meuse Valley, but the dragoons dispersed them near Chaileville. There were similar encounters with troops in other towns, particularly at Criel near Chanfilly. Here the troops were pelted with bricks and broken 'bottles Fifteen soldiers were badly injured. The Riot Act was read and the cavalry charged with drawn swords, and routed the crowd. Forty Criel rioters were injured. Incendiaries burnt nine mills at Tourcoing, containing cereals. The housewives at Langwy thrashed a dealer for selling bad eggs. A hostile crowd at St. Pierre Leglise met 'the Socialist agitators at the station and severely beat them with sticks. The Confederation of Labor is circularising conscripts urging them not to fire on civilians.

The Minister for Agriculture reports that the corn crop is 23</ 3 per cent, above that of 1010, and that there is sufficient to supply the whole of the country. Owing to the expensive fodder farmers are likely to prefer to grow cattle for the market, hence the price of meat is diminishing.
