EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. A meeting of the Egmont County Council was held, on Friday lost. Piwent: Councillors Dudley (chairman). Maxwell, Hurst, Farquhar, Young, Harverv, Willcox and Maoßeynolds. THE RAILWAY. The Normany by Town Board wrote asking the Council to elect a delegate to present the petition to Parliament. The clerk said he had written to the fleet that the delegates of the Kapuni conference were under the impression that the four members of Parliament would present the -petitions. Cr. Macßpvnolds had the notion that in matters like that it should originate from Opunake, because if petitions are presented—say. from Uawera—people in Stratford get the idea that the routs question is involved, whereas if it comes from Opunake that feeling of bringing nj) the route question does not enter. Cr. Farquhar: There is a feeling in the county that Opunake is too slow on. the railway question, and that if anything is .going to be done it must he done by outsiders.

The 'chairman said Opunake had always taken a lead in the matter. In any case the' heading of the petitions was wrong; it should have read to construct a branch railway from Opunake to connect with the New Plymouth-Wel-lington line. Cr. Farouhar believed the same as fir. Macßeynolds, that Opunake should take the lead. , . Cr. Willcox: The meeting at Kapuni was a very successful one and well conducted; the question of route was kept out of it. Cr. Hurst: The best meeting and biggest meeting that has been held in connection with the railway wag held in Opunake. , The question of appointing a delegate was not considered further. The _ Normanby Town Board asked that signed petitions be forwarded not later than the 31st of the month. Over 7000 signatures had 'been obtained to the petition. FOREMEN'S REPORTS. The various riding foremen reported on work done,.during the month., Foreman Humphries submitted metal requirements for the ensuing season, which would be 1900 yds. boulder stone, to be crushed and carted out, and ISOOyds. of pit metal.—lt was resolved that the chairman and Ops. Young and Macßeynolds be appointed a committee to consult with the foreman as to where the work i s to be done. It was als,o resolved to renew three culverts near Oeo with concrete pipes, and a resolution was passed that when the Opunake foreman is engaged in pipe making he he authorised to put a man on the road in his stead, «nch expense to be charged agamst the riding for which the pipes are required. } LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL. The secretary of the Counties Council forwarded a copy of the following pledge, which they asked the Council to submit to every candidate for Parliamentary honors at next election: If returned as a member of the House of Representatives will he use his best endeavors to induce and assist any Government in office to introduce during the first session of Parliament a comprehensive Local Government Bill? The chairman said, from his experience at the conference of delegates, there would 'be no unanimity on a Local Government Bill.

The circular was received. GENERAL. In connection with the establishment of another hank in Opunake, the manTL °t, tl ! e l '? ank «f New South Wales wrote that his bank would not open at Opunake at present. The manager of the Bank of Australasia wrote that he had forwarded particulars to headquarters, and would announce the result
