KING MAXUHL AXD HIS THRONE. Kiniff Manuel of Portugal was deposed on October 5 last, and proceeded to England, where he has since resided. A Republic was formed as the result of the (revolution, but almost from the day of his departure King Manuel's partisans have .been working to restore him to the throne, and. as he possesses a considerable fortune, he is enabled to afford them substantial aid. Stories of Monarchist plots hare Ijeen of frequent occurrence, ami a few months ago it was announced that 1000 rille.* and four field guns had been seized by the Spanish Authorities near the northern frontier of Portugal. In June it was reported that a party of Monarchists had entered the town of Chaves. A ea.hle message received at the end of July stated that Senhor Cristo, son of a well-known Portuguese Monarchist, had declared tint King Manuel was devoting one-third of his fortune to the support of the Monarchist cause, and that he was personally directing- a conspiracy for his restoration. The Monarchists, it was then stated, could count on the support of 10.000 men.
