GUDDEN DEATH
> EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST. At tlie inquest yesterday on the bodj j of George Henrv Martin, who died sud donly on Monday evening, Dr. H. A McCleland gave evidence that he h:i( made a post mortem examination of tin body at the morgue. It was that of : fairly well nourished man, and then were no external marks of violence or in jury. The right lung was considerably collapsed—only a quarter of its natura size—and its covering was adherent t( everything round it. The liver was con ' siderably enlarged, and the stomach was very much dilated. On examining the heart, which was smaller than normal witness found that the edges of the mit ral valves were thickened and nodular The condition was quite sufficient to account for death, which in witness' opinion was due to heart failure, caused by the. abnormal condition of lung and liver. Evidence as to deceased's sudden illness in a paddock near the stables where he was employed, his removal to the stables, and his expiry before a docI tor could arrive, was given by William i Wood and Henry Humbling, and the Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence. Dr. McCleland, speaking to a News representative subsequently, said the post mortem revealed a remarkable condition of the organs. The lungs, which should have been the, size pretty well of a man's head, were flat. The heart was very small, but 'the man had an enormous liver. It was marvellous, he said, that the nian had lived at all.
