TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). The Dannevirke steeplechase meeting takes place to-day, and, judging by the acceptances, some fair racing should be witnessed. Lovers of jumping should be provided with plenty of excitement, for five of the seven events are hurdle races or steeplechases. The Dannevirke Steeple includes well-known performers like Sir Lethe, Wirral, Lovell and Pleaidcs, and even at the weights the topweight will prove hard to beat if he can reproduce his Riecarton form. Marton running makes several of the races look easy to pick, and Connecticut, Epsom Lass and ITimitangi will have many supporters if taken to the meeting. The Open Hurdles will provide a good race if Te Wlietu, Windage and Co. sport silk. Oxton is far from sound and did not relish the hnrd track at Marton last week. Donzel has not raced since winning at Napier Park in the autumn. The black gelding started five times last season, and his record read: Three firsts, one second and once unplaced. The Ashburton Racing Club's spring meeting will take place on Thursday and I riday. .
Mr. R. Barlow's appeal is set down for hearing oil Tuesday next. Glenogle died in 'Southland last week. Flitaway has broken down and will visit Varco this season. .Thus Mr. John Rowe, Auckland's representative on the much-abused Racing Commission: "I think they (the Governmen) put a thankless job on to the Commissioners tlmt they were not game to tackle themselves." Anyway, Parliament has once more exposed its ignorance of racing matters, and further freak legislation is promised.
