AN AMERICAN SCANDAL.
For years past scores of clergymen and other prominent people of Easton, Pennsylvania, have been receiving through the post anonymous letters of a most defamatory and indecent description. In tlte nine years during which the mails have been used for the circulation of these -scurrilous epistles, some hundreds of letters have been written, and in each ease the recipient found his or her character attached in a most scandalous fashion. SecV.et service men were, employed' to discover from whom these mysterious letters emanated, but, it was not until the other day that they ever got a clue that wpuld justify any definite action. Acting on certain discoveries that have just been made, the police lia.ve now arrested Miss Harriet Dewitt, daughter of aOeading citizen in Easton, on suspicion of being the writer of the letters. Miss Dewitt declares her innocence, and says that she herself is one of those whose character has been defamed by this anonymous writer.
