A SUDDEN DEATH. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. A man, a.bout 70 years of age, not yet identified, dropped dead while waiting for a triim. in Syinonds ■ street today. A 'MINER'S DEATH. Christcburch, Last Night. An inquest concerning the death at Thomas Patterson, who received fatal injuries in the Homebush colliery at Glentunnel last Friday, was resumed today. George Aitkin, deputy manager of the mine, stated that deceased waa employed in undermining coal, in ord«r to widen the tunnel, when the accident occurred, A stone weighing about 30 cwt. .became dislodged and fell on Patterson. .Replying to Inspector Green, of the Mines Department, witness said that he had examined the place before the accident, and deemed it to be safe. Deceased was a capable man, and was carrying out his work properly. An eye-witness stated that a block of stone fell on deceased's right shoulder, pinning him to the ground, while a timber prop was being applied to the roof. John Campbell, mine manager, stated that as be did not consider Patterson was badly injured, he had the stone broken up before the inspector visited the mine.
A verdict was returned that deceased "was accidentally killed. SUDDEN DEATH. A man named George Henry Martin, a groom employed at the Masonic Stable, in Devon-street East, died suddenly on Monday evening. He had been ill some five or six weeks ago with general debility and influenza. Dr. Home treated him, and he seemed to recover his health. He was in good spirits early on Monday evening, and went home to tea, but a little later he was seen in a small paddock, looking very ill. His fellow-em-ployees were called, and they carried him to the stables, but he expired before medical aid could be summoned. An inquest is to be held to-day.
