BARRY BEATS FOGWELL

AN EASY WIN. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. London, September 11. The sculling match for £2OO a-side between Barry and Fogwell was won by Barry. Fogwell led to Harrods, where Barry overhauled him and won by four lengths. Fogwell won the toss and elected to take the Middlesex station. There was a huge crowd afloat and ashore, and there were also three steamers following the race. There was a fast tide and following wind. Fogwell was quicker away, and in a minute was clear of Barry. At the end of a mile Fogwell was two lengths ahead, but Barry was sculling beautifully and without apparent effort. At the Crabtree, where Fogwell was troubled with roughish water, Barry took the lead, and at Gwynne's was three lengths ahead. Thenceforward the race was a procession, Barry being eight lengths ahead at Barnes, and he paddled home in leisurely fashion.

Fogwell showed signs of a gruelling race, but was not unduly distressed. The official verdict was 3Va lengths and the time 22min 4sec. MATOII WITH ARNST WANTED. PRESS VIEWS. Received 12, 9.35 p.m. London, September 12. Barn', interviewed, attributed the victory to his body swing. He added that lie was prepared to meet Arnst on the Thames, if financially supported. The newspapers generally regard the race as a triumph for the English style, Barry's long, well-swung body beating the challenger's quick armful short strokes, unless for long distances. The Times declares that Arnst asks £750 expenses, but he would hope to be content 'with considerably less if he really desires to come to England. The Sporting Life sny.s that Barry on the Thames, and Barry on strange water a.re two different men. Barry has Ibeeu promised £SOO stake money for a match with Arnst, but another £7OO is required. It suggests that the public should subscribe the amount. The Sportsman states that Barry undoubtedly did not show his best form on the Zambesi.
