THE COST OF LIVIW. In the Premier's Budget speech he made reference to the fact that the cost of living had advanced enormously in all lands, and promised a Royal Commission to look into the causes in New Zealand and to supply, if possible, a remedy. The one probable reason given in the Premier's references to the subject was the increase in the production of gold, but the suggestion is not satisfying to the ordinary man, who has no knowledge of the effect this overproduction of 'a standard of payment lias on the price of necessities. The increases in (lie price of necessities are out of proportion to the increase in the size of wages, and we recently quoted figures showing what a tremendous advance there had been in the size of taxable incomes, this, of course, going to prove that increases in
