BOOKMAKER EXPELLED

FROM A WOK KING MEN'S CLUB. ■SUPREME COl'ltT PROCEEDINGS. * By Telegraph —Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. Ml'. Justice Sim gave judgment today in the case in which Arthur Lhav nought an injunction restraining the Wellington Working Men's Club from expelling him from membership. The committee of the club had decided on his expulsion on the ground that, as a bookmaker, he was an undesirable, character. No charge was formulated against Law, who was given 110 optportunitv bv the committee of being heard.

The judge said the principles of natural justice must be observed, and an accused person must have notice of the charges against him, and be •liven an opportunity of being heard in his defence. These principles ha<l been violated by the committee, and on this ground the expulsion was inoperative. Further, the committee was not justified in treating plaintiff as an undesirable character, only because he was a bookmaker, such a calling not being unlawful in itself. For the purposes of social intercourse. one of the objects of the club, a bookmaker might be in every way useful and desirable.
