SWIMMING THE CHANNEL
ACHIEVED BY BURGESS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, September 6. Burgess successfully accomplished the Channel swim. It was Burgess' fourteenth attempt to swim the English Channel. He left the South Foreland at 10.55 in the morning and reached Cape Grisnez at 10,30 to-day. He made fine progress at the outset, but a thick fog came on in the evening. No news of the swimmer and the accompanying motor boat could be procured, and for a time there mis some anxiety. The sea remained calm and the temperature of the water was 60 degrees, compared with 02 degrees when Webb accomplished the feat. Piurgess made a plucky struggle against the rapid tides and driftage. He met with a great reception on returning to Dover, and was none the worse for his experience. lie wins a 230-guinea cup. THE KINO'S CONGRATULATIONS. Received 7, f1.35 p.m. London, September 7.
