MARSLAND HILL MYSTERY

A SUPPOSED SUICIDE. The young man who was found at the. foot of Maryland Hill on Sunday evening, with a wound in his throat, and who gave his name as Arthur Jackson, died in tho Hospital at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, from septic pneumonia, occasioned by the wound, which, it is believed, wat, self-inflicted. Enquiries which have been made by the police indicate that the information supplied to them by deceased was quite wrong. When questioned by Senior Sergeant Dart he gave his name as Arthur Jackson, and said he arrived from Whangarei about a fortnight ago, and that he was in Whangarei for only two or three weeks before coming here. He said that his father was named Robert Jackson, and lived at Napier, but so far this information has not been confirmed. It appeared that "Jackson" had not slept in a house for two or three nights preceding Sunday, but said than lie had slept in a hoarding-house in the East End for. two nights, probably in tho early part of last week. Amongst the articles found in his pockets was a pocket-hook, on one of the parfjes of which was written the name MeSporran, with an address, "35, Khyber Pass, Auckland." This pocketbook was forwarded to the Auckland police, and a telegram has been received from Inspector Cullen stating that Mrs. MeSporran, of 35, Khyber Pass, Auckland, had identified the pocket-book and the handwriting as being her son's, Archibald MeSporran. He had left Ilia home on August .'lO, and had not 'been heard of since. A description of him, fts a "missing friends notice" was to have been gazetted this week. McSporran's father is coming to New Plymouth by the is.s. Rarawa to-day to see if he can identify the body as that of his son, and an inquest will be held on Friday afternoon. The reason for not holding it to-day, and so allow Mr. MeSporran, sen., to return to Auckland to-night, if he desires to, is that' Mr. Fitzherbcrt has to hold the monthly Magistrate's Court Bitting at Opunakc to-day.
