The Governor's speech congratulated the people of Australia on the continued general prosperity of the Commonwealth and referred, to the importance of the work of the Imperial Conference to the dominions. Reference was also made to the steady progress of the construction of the Australian navy and the patriotic response of the youths under the universal training scheme.' It was proposed to revise the tariff with a view to getting rid of anomalies. The programme of the session includes Bills for the creation of a Commonwealth bank, transcontinental railway, compensation for seamen, navigation, also measures to codify: the criminal law, and amend (he Electoral, Old-age Pensions, and Conciliation and Arbitration Acts. It was stated that the progressive hind tax was ■encouraging settlement, and attracting desirable immigrants. The Ministers have under consideration the establishment of reciprocal trade with New Zealand and Canada. ■■»"* -^
