HOCKEY.

LADIES' TOURNAMENT. ' TAISAXAKI BEATEN. By Telegrapnf-Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The New Zealand ladies' hockey tournament was continued to-day in line Weather. The itest game was between Wellington A and Nelson, both teams showing splendid form. The attendance of the public was about 500. Particulars are as follows:

■Hawke's Bay defeated Taranaki by 3 goals to nil. Play was fast and even. Taranaki's forward team was weak, but they put up a good fight, though their shooting at goal was disappointing. Their backs put up a good defence, but the team's endeavors to make the game purely an attacking one spoilt their general play from the start. Hawke's Bay forced the pace, and Miss Pitt scored oarly in the game. All through the first spell Hawke's Bay's .bully made a. brilliant piece of play "by sending in a terrific shot. Taranaki's goalkeeper saved beautifully. Towards the end of the first spell she scored again. The: second spell was faster and more even, and play on both sides was greatly improved. Miss Smith scored Hawke's Bay third goal. Mr. Muldoon refcreed. Tho Wellington A v. Nelson match was the surprise of the. day, the former team putting up a good display against a team supposed to be vastly superior. The Wellington ladies had distinctly the better of the game, and had they been more fortunate in the last five minutes they could have prevented Nekon from scoring. The first spell was nil in favor of Wellington, but in the second spell play was more even, especially in tho last fifteen minutes, when it got exciting. The closing stages were in favor of Nelson. The game ended in a draw, one goal each. Miss Whitmore scored for Kelson, and Miss Dement for Wellington. The game was strenuous, and some brilliant play eventuated on both sides. The local team was too slow in forward ward rushes. Nelson's score came about by breach of the obstruction rule by Miss Harris in the circle. Miss Whitmore. securing the ball from a free hit, rushed in, eluding Miss Jacobsen. Mr. C. Manning was referee. Wairarapa drew with Manawatu, two each. The game was full of incident, the exposition of hockey being a pleasure to watch. Both teams were composed of young players. At the end of the first spell Manawatu led through a good shot by Miss T. McKenzie After resuming Miss Orr equalised matters. The last stages were very fast. Miss Collingwood scored Manirivntn's second goal, and Miss Reid equalised for Wairarapa. ,Mr. G Keall refereed.

■Southland beat West Coast by 2 to nil. Neither side scored in 'the first spell. Southland's combination was good. Their goals were got bv Miss M. Marsh and Miss J. Marsh. Mr. D. Floyd was referee.

Wanganui heat Wellington B bv 6 to nil. It was a slow game, being mostly in Wanganui's favor. The score at halftime was 2 to nil in Wanganui'* favor. Scores were made ,by Misses I Penrett H), O. Jones (!) and C. McDonald (1). Mr. Pitt refereed.

Canterbury A beat Manawatu B by 5 to nil. Tt was an interesting game, 'being mostly in favor of the winners. Mi.sses Pcarce and McMillan scored a goal each in the first spell, and scorers, in the second were Misses Pearce (2) and G. Morgan. Mr. O. Carver refereed. Canterbury B drew with Buller, 3 goals each. It was a verv hard contest, and play, though not of a'high standard, was exciting. At half-time the score was: Canterbury 3, Buller 1. Buller improved wonderfully in the second spell, but could only equalise the scores Scorers for Canterbury were: Misses Letter, Fergus and Rhodes, and. for Buller, Misses Peacock. Greenline and Hale. Mr. C. Bay refereed.

TARANAKI ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Taranaki' Hockey Association was held last night, Mr. Kern)) presiding. There were also present Messrs. Priest (Imrlcwond), Ralphe (Waitan). Harrison (Eltham). Dowhirst (■Stratford) and Wood (New Plymouth). A letter was received reporting a nlayer in the Stratford-Kaponga match for isulting behaviour. He is to be reprimanded. Tt was decided that the trial match to pick a team to play Auckland be held on the 7th hist. I The Auckland team will be entertained | to dinner bv the Taranaki Association i on the evening of the 21st—the day of the match.

The Auckland team is reported to be a particularly strong l combination. The second play-off. Stratford v. TnS'lewood, will t;ike place at Xew Plymoutli on Sf'iilemlier 28 at 2.30 p.m.
