POLAR EXPLORATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Yesterday. The Aparima arrived from Calcutta to-day, and brought seven pony mules for Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition. They are wiry-looking animals, and stood the journey well. They will be forwarded to Lyttelton. GISBORNE BAND CONTEST. Gisborne, Yesterday. With a view to dissipating a misapprehension 'regarding accommodation arrangements for visiting bandsmen, the citizens' committee to.-day decided further to circularise bands, explaining the arrangements, and explaining also that, though sleeping apartments in hotels for all cannot be obtained, meals will be served 1 at the hotels and principal caterers'. It is> contended that the comfort of the visitors will be more complete than at any previous contest. The Licensed Victuallers' Association decided to co-operate with the citizens' committee to this end, and the Cosmopolitan Club will extend full privilegea of membership. NEW PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS. Wellington, Yesterday. The time for sending competitive de- . signs for the new Parliament Buildings expired Inst night. Between thirty awd forty have been received, and the work of judging them will be commenced in a few days. One of the conditions of the competition is that the design shall be judged by a competent professional man resident outside New Zealand, and, in accordance with that proTision, the Government has secured the sen-ices of a gentleman in Australia.
