The authorities have hitherto suppressed the facts of the cholera ravages. The riot at Vcrbicaro revealed that a hundred corpses lay unburied for many days. Three-quarters of- the population of Leghorn have fled. The assisttance of the Government is being sought to relieve the distress of the remainder. Eight hundred towns and villages in southern and central parts of Northern Italy are infected with cholera. The superstitious peasantry are threatening the sanitary officials with death, believing that the Government is poisoning the water for the purpose of decimating the poor;
