A cable message from Sydney states that Canon Long I 'has accepted the Bishopric of.Rathurst. A portrait of the late Mr. T. E. Taylor was unveiled last n'igty at the rooms of the Christchurch Prohibition League by Mr. C. E. Salter, who spoke at some length on the life and work of Mr. Taylor. Miss Roberts and the Rev. D. Henderson also spoke.—Press telegram. Messrs. H. J. Gilbert and N\ T. Maunder were nominated yesterday for the vacancy on the Borough Council. Mr. Gilbert was nominated by Messrs. E. A. Bullot, I. Morrison, W. Morey, A. Ruff, T. Francis, ,1. Downs, F. Newell, J. N. Johnson, H. !!. Oattley and J. O'Neill. Mr. Maunder was nominated by Messrs. A. |[. Ambury, C. 11. Weston, V. Elliott and G. H. McGahey. Mr. A. H. Herbert retires from business in New Plymouth as from to-day. The staff yesterday met and presented Mr. and Mrs. Herbert with a handsome Chesterfield armchair as a token of their appreciation of the efforts of Mr. and .Mrs. Herbert in promoting and maintaining the good fueling existing amongst flu stall'. Miss Stewart, who is also severing her connection with the business was made the recipient of a set of silver candlesticks.
