THE LEAGUE GAME. j TARANAKI (16) v. NELSON (8). There was an attendance of about 400 people at Taumata Park, Eltliam, yesterday afternoon, when representatives of the hop and butter provinces tried conclusions. The weather was ideal, with tha exception of a fairly strong wind that blew from the grandstand. The teams lined out as follows: Taraiiaki.—Full-back, E. Stockman; three-quarters, D. Twohill, C. McLean and M. Julian; five-eighth, O'Sullivnn; half-backs, Moir (captain) and Tocker; forwards, Finclvam, Kyle, Pukere, Morslu'.'id, J. Charters and C. Robinson. Nelson. —Full-back, Beekley; threequarters, Frauchelle, Page ami Dixon; five-eighths, Cedennan and .Tames; hillfNtapp (captain); forwards, B. Teaiy, K. Teary, Mason (2), Ma.ii.son, Dixon. Nelson (green) kicked ofl', and the first incident of moment was Moir breaking away for Taranaki (yellow and jblaek), and play rested at the 25 flag. 'Keeping up the a thick, Julian, for the Yellows, scored a brilliant try, the leather passing through the hands of all the backs with splendid precision. A fine goal was placed.

Taranaki, 5; Nelson, 0. The Yellows were forced as the result of an attempt at goal. Play was somewhat dully fbr a few minutes, and an opportunity to "size up" the merits of the teams was given. The Yellows were so far smarter than their opponents in attacking methods, speedier of foot, and also in handling the ball, and it was noticed that the Greens lost several chances by too deliberate play. After forcing the Greens, Taranaki maintained the advantage and were rewarded by another fine try by Julian, the passing bout preceding it being engaged in by live of the backs. No mistake was made with the kick. Taranaki, 10; Nelson, 0. The Greens then had a look-in, a try being scored by means of fast following up, the Taranaki full-back having mulled. The kick was not successful. Taranaki, 10; Nelson, 3. Play was mainly in the Green territory, the fast passing rushes of the Yellows being nullified by determined work on the part of their opponents. The score was unaltered at half-time. On changing ends, the Greens made matters lively, and were sooil on their opponents' line, the Yellows being forced to carry the lcn.ther over their own line. But tho defence was too good and the Greens were pleased to get two free kicks for breathing time. After ft good passing rush, they were unlucky in being penalised for oil'-sido play, and a kiok at goal from a mark was also abortive. There was a Yellow kick, followed by a prolonged series of passing, and play menaced the Green line. In a twinkling Moir got over,*but the kick was resultless.

Taranaki, 13; Nelson, 3. From a scrum in the middle of the arena a pretty piece of passing among the Green backs resulted in Dixon scoring near the corner. Frauchell° converted with a huge kick. Taranaki, 13; Nelson, 8. The Yellows had hard lack in not scoring after a fast set of passes, and then Stockman got a clever mark, but was not ahle to pilot the ball quite satisfactorily. Twohill broke away on his own, heat the full-back,' but tem- |" rai liy lost the leather, and was downI i il. The Greens put in more good passing hut were always baulked in tlnir efforts. The Yellows were forced, hilt they had their revenge, rushing to their oponents' line. Within two minutes. Julian scored his third try, after Moir having made a fine opening. No major points. Taranaki, 18; Nelson, 8. Continuing their attack, the Yellows' passing elicited loud applause, and the Greens were forced. Play had brightened considerably in the second half, and [ towards the finish the spectators (having come to learn the game a hit after being Rugby-ites for so long), grew more demonstrative. No further score eventuated, however, and the final remained as above, supporters of the home team being highly jubilant, and with vague hopes of wresting the cup from Auckland when these teams meet on Saturday.
