HUNT CLUB RACES. The annual meeting under the auspices »f the North Taranaki Hunt Club takes place at the racecourse to-day. Good fields have been entered for the various events, and some exhilarating sport should be witnessed. Complete arrangements have been made by the committee and the secretary (Mr. A. L. Humphries), and, given fine weather, it is confidently expected that there will be ;i large attendance. The Garrison Band will play a programme of music during the day, whilst luncheon will also be obtainable on the ground. To enable visitors from the country to attend and return home in comfort, the evening train has been delayed to leave New Plymouth at 5.35. TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. The committee of the Taranaki Jockey Club has under consideration the question of ■ installing a silent totalisator machine in time for the forthcoming season. The secretary, Mr. E. P. Webster, is obtaining full particulars of machines from various makers in the Dominion, and it is probable the committee will come to a decision at its next meeting. The silent machines are now used by many of the leading clujbs of the Dominion, and give the greatest satisfaction, enabling clubs to cope with increasing business without any undue hustle. In the event of the club deciding to make this forward move it will necessitate practically the entire remodelling of and considerable additions to the present totalisator house.
TURF TOPICS. (By " Moluroa "). Hunt Club races to-day. First race starts at 12.30. The first acceptance for the New Zealand Cup falls due to-morrow. After looking on at to-day's nonbetting meeting sports will recognise that it is up to them to join the Sporting Defence League. First-rate acceptances have been received for Marton, including Master Sylvia, Shining Star, Sandy Paul, Star Lass, and a whole host of Taranaki-owned horses. A very smart crowd have paid up for the Shorts at Marton. There is not a really bad horse amongst them, and a fine nice should result. Old Wirral is up againstavery moderate lot in the Marton Hack Steeple, and if caught in a galloping mood will probably make light of his 11.13. Euroco is going on nicely at AYanganui and is expected to run forward first start.
St. Toney is bright and well and will have a big following of Taranaki punters when saddled up at Marton. At Ellerslie Whatashot is going well and is apparently quite sound again. The Muskateer gelding will be railed to Marton next week.
An Auckland paper reports that Lady Patricia is to be sent over to Sydney. Sarcastic sports will ask /'What for?"*
Koran did not turn out the champion anticipated and will be raced on the ilat this season.
Turbine is breaking the watches at Ellerslic and should be worth watching later on.
Two sports were talking of the Hunt Club meeting. Said one: "Where can a man get a bet on Thursday?" "Oh, anywhere but on the racecourse," was the reply. It will soon be not respectable to stay away from races.
''Tartar" Julian's appeal to the Waliganui Metropolitan Committee against his disqualification by the Wanganui Jockey Club is set down for hearing on Wednesday next.
Shining Star is rapidly pickirtg up form and is freely engaged at Marton and at Wanganui. Otaraoa. is in good nick, and if started to-day should give a good account of himself. The son of Sylvia Park is getting up in years, and has not had Ins number hoisted for many a day.
