NO SIGN OF POWELKA.
PRECAUTIONS IN THE SOUTH -"' }, ISLAND. \A By Telegraph—Press Association, /!; Christchurch, Last Night. '"■ There is always a possibility that <&•'.£ escaped prisoner, Powelka, may manage- :> to elude the police in the North Islaoi '•• and cross into the South Island. Van- ," ; ous .steamers- and other craft trade from ■'. :>■ different ports in the North to a* many, in -the South, and it is conceivable that i>3 Powelka may secure a passage. All porta - ,| in the North aire being closely watched, "* and the Southern ports arc under siml- '% lar surveillance. . ,3 Intimation of the escape was tele-'-t'Ji graphed to every police station in New !• \"i Zealand, and every officer hoe been in-' £*l structed to keep a look-out lor the '.| escapee. ■ ~4
The local police are at a loss to M- '-\f count for the facility with which Po- h welfca from the Terrace Gaol. 'i| One officer said that the modern feeUnf '4 against the adoption of stern precaution* ■ 'J ary measures when dealing with noted- r ,s ous escapees might have something-to *j do with it. No doubt Powelka could be • ■ ~s made amply secure, but the public would „"./- not tolerate the thought of a langirisher - -■ in prison in chains. At one time the■;, '■.. pilbKc were not so tender-hearted, aa he ,"'' had himself seen prisoners parading the ' i Wellington streete with leg-irone on. He ''x, did not know whether leg-irons were stall" »• in use in prisons, but he had not «eeWH| them in public for many years. , A pde* ■■'M 'oner like Powelka, if he wae.to'be kept ,\*J safely in. custody, seemed to require.- ■>& more than an ordinary measure of sur- 4veillance. •. ■ j ABJRESTED ON SUSPICION. V? BUT NOT POWELKA. ' /! Auckland, Last Night. ■. ■'■ A constable on his beat in Shortland street in the city to-night noticed a ■ ' maa resembling Powelka, and took him " off to the police station. Curiously '. - 1 enough, in addition to a facial reran- '" ':-[ blance, he had a made on his arm slmV- . - lar to the one which Powelka is said tyi ' bear. The man was able to pro*e to the .. satisfaction of the officers that he wae, .•- not the escapee, and was accordingly m» £ leased. ' ?
NOT CAPTURED YET. -, . Wellington, Last Night. . * The sustained' vigilance of a largenum- '■■' a ber of police officers has so far brought no material development in the matter of the escaped prisoner, PoweHa. ; Up to date no reward has been offered for Powelka's recapture. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. F. . Waldegrave, states that a departmental . enquiry will be held into the circum-' ,! stances of the escape. Such enquiry, it ; is understood, will include an inveattgation of the present condition of the Terrace Gaol as a prison. ■'
