STATE GRADING OF PRODUCE

FACTORIES FIGHT THE FEDERAL SYSTEM. THE NEW ZEALAND GAMBLE CONDEMNED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 30, 11 p.m. Sydney, August 30. A conference of co-operative butter factories resolved to form a fighting fund for the purpose of testing the validity of the regulations under which the Federal Government affixes the grades of butter to the boxes, and also carried a motion pledging the delegates to a system of direct export. Mr. Osborne, a Victorian delegate, said he had proved that direct export was the most payable. Local selling had been disastrous to New Zealand factories. He had compared the balancesheets of New Zealand factories for five years, and none had paid the same average as co-operative factories in Victoria. The gambling and local selling in New Zealand which had been brought about by grade-stamping had not proved profitable to producers.
