THE STORM AT CHARLESTON
THE TOWN INUNDATED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. New York, August 20. Six torpedo boats were driven ashore by the storm at Charleston and a score of other small vessels wrecked. The whole of tho lower part of the town is still under water and telephone and telegraph communication is destroyed. Seventy-five persons are marooned on the Isle of Palms and are suffering from hunger and thirst. DAMAGE AMOUNTS TO A MILLION DOLLARS. Received 31, 12.20 a.m. London, August 30. During the hurricane at Charleston six torpudo boats were tossed high on the beach by the violence of the waves. The navy yards suffered. The death roll has reached eleven. Scores of launches and small craft were broken to fragments. Damage to property is estimated at a million dollars. The water is now subsiding in the streets and efforts are being made to resume traffic.
