WAGES AT WOOLLEN MILLS
. DOMINION AWARD WANTED. By TeJograph—Prees Association. Wellington, Tuesday. When- the woollen mill dispute eame before the Conciliation Council to-'day, the union's representative said that the union wa» anxious to hare V.he disputa settled as quickly as possible, to give the districts containing woollen mills a lead. The cost of living was higher at Petonc than in other woollen centres.
The employers' representative stated tliat the conference held in Ohristchurch had adjourned on the understanding that arrangements should be made whereby a Dominion award might be secured. Unless the unions were prepared to discuss their claims from the point of view of a New Zealand award, the employers did not propose to go on with the matter. Every mill was in competition with every other mill throughout the Dominion, and it would not do for any mill to have an advantage over another.
The union representative agreed tihat the suggestion that all disputes should be heard before an Arbitration Court at about the same time was reasonable, and the matter was adjourned for further consideration.
