NO SIGN OF POWELKA.

*m RHnCENCE OF THE POLICE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. JoMpb Powelka, who escaped from the Terrace Gaol early on Sunday morning kat, is still at liberty. The vigilance oi the searchers has not been in any sense relaxed, but reasonable reticence' is being observed as to the present disposition of the poilce forces. Questioned as to where attention was most concentrated, Inspector Ellison declined to make pujblic what was being done in this direction, "There has been too much published as it is," he added. There is no truth in the statement that a lady at or about Johnsonville gave Powelka a suit of clothes. .

There is no doubt, says the Palmerston Times, that Powelka will find many sympathisers. The morbid feeling for criminal exists even in' otherwise normal minds. The news of the escape was posted on our window yesterday. Those working within could hear remarks, mainly from youths, .such as "Good on his pluck," "Good for him," "Hope he will get away," and over the telephone la<sy enquirers confessed to a feeling that they would like to help the man. That is one of the curious mental contradictions of human nature, for if the man were back here and up to his old fire raising and other tricks the very people who sympathise most theoretically would be the most perturbed.
