ALEXANDER WITH COAL. An arrival in port yesterday was the Alexander, which brought 273 tons of coal from Greymouth. She sailed about 9 p.m. on her return to Greymouth. The German ship Olinda, which arrived at Melbourne recently from Hamburg, had some exciting experiences. A hurricane stripped off every sail set, and she was running before a tempest in a few minutes under bare poles, deluged by huge seas. She rushed onward, the sport of the elements. The man at the wheel was lashed in position to prevent him being swept overboard, and the precaution proved a wise one, for a mountainous sea swept down on the ship, broke high over her bows, and tore along the whole length of the deck, carrying devastation with it. . Her cabins were a mass of swirling water. i When it had gone her boats had been i washed out of the chocks, her wheelhouse and compasses had gone with it. and, worse still, the man at the wheel was hanging by his rope lashing over the ship's rail half-drowned, and in dire peril of the waves licking him off his frail support. He was hauled safely oi board. I OVERSEA VESSELS. FOR WELLINGTON. From London—(N.Z. Shipping Col). Indralema (due about August 28), Bailed on June 16, via Australia, Auckland and Napier. (Tyser).
