BRUTAL MURDER. TWO WOMEN KILL ANOTHER. Colden (U.S.A.). August l;l. A ghastly confession of a brutal murder has been made by an Italian woman, Mrs. I'ergione. who implicated a second Italian, Mrs. Oarninione, now serving a term of imprisonment for forgery. According to the confession, the two women lured a Mis. Laguardia into the mountains, o U the pretence that her husband, who bad been missing since three weeks before, bad been found, their object being to rob their victim of £l5O.

Mrs. Laguardia, becoming suspicious, took flight, relinquishing hor baby in the arms of Garramone. General Zurlindcn, twice Minister for War, in a press interview, said that France has everything ready for war. j The uncertainties and disconcerting delays which occurred in 1870 at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war will not be repeated to-day. The Germans, General Zurlinden said, will find our army just as ready as their own. Our mobilisation and our concentration of railway transport are remarkably efficient, while our infantry, cavalry and artillery are all trained for a big war. A warrant lias been issued for the arrest of the manager of the Credit Fonder, an American named Maurice Jean, following the raiding of the company's many offices throughout France. Jean is charged with having sold a large amount of stocks and bonds on American securities, which the French officials say were of doubtful origin. Jean recently arrived in New York and calling at the French consulate, declared that he was not a fugitive from justice, having left France a week before the warrant was issued. He said that his real business was to realise securities to pay investors. DOMIXIOX GOVERNORS. London, August 12. Mr. Arthur Lynch. National M.P. for West Clare, addressing the House of Commons on the Pensions to Governors Bill, said that the Governor of a colony ! earns his money, but the Governor of a dominion is a mere ornament, and a i very doubtful one at that. He was verylittle appreciated in the dominion he was supposed to govern. Mr. Lynch said that he had conversed with some of the most distinguished overseas statesmen, in whose opinions they had reached the stage when Governors' functions were absolutely useless. The statesmen added that Governors did no harm, because they did not dare lift their fingers in any State on any matter. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. .. Paris, August 13. Professor Kemerling, of Leyden, has placed bis laboratory, having' facilities for the production of the most intense cold 1 , down to 270 degrees centigrade (4.50 degrees below zero Fahrenheit), sufficient to liquefy even helium gas, at the disposal of M'nie. Several German fishing smacks have been equipped with wireless apparatus to enable them to receive while at sea wireless storm signals from the shore meterological stations. Trials have been conducted with the greatest success. SHOP-LI ITING. Paris, August li 3. Five young ladies were arrested yesterday in a large emporium near the Opera House.
