DISTRICT NEWS.
(Fr(m Our Own Correspondents). TIKORANGT. The Tikorangi Rowing Club held * euchre party on Tuesday evening, which' was well attended. The ladies' prize was won by Mrs. 0. Wills, and the gentlemen's by Mr. W. Terrill. A dance followed, and during the interval medals won by the youths' er'ew at the last regatta were presented by Mrs. H. G. Hicks. The recipients were L. Lyne, A. Whitehead. L. Lockwood, H. Alexander, and 11. Whitehead'. As- the Hall Committee have been promoting euchre partics fortnightly throughout the winter their generous action in giving up their date for the Benefit of the Rowing Club will doubtless be handsomely acknowledged.
The annual concert and dance in connection- with the Public .Library is fixed' for Wednesday, September 6, and the committee arc sparing no effort in providing a programme even better than is usual at these favorite gatherings. A party of vocalists will come out with Mrs. Arnold George from New Plymouth, and, given a fine night, the hall is sure to be crowded.
Mr. John Armstrong has purchased Mr. NiehoPs valuable suburban property on the Ngatimara road.
It is reported that the local dairy company has disposed of their output for the coming export season at a satisfactory figure.
The cricketers are busy laying down a new patch in Mr. H. A. Foreman's paddock, iind intend beginning practice shortly. '
Without In any way expressing an opinion as to the merits or otherwise of the controversy in reference to public affairs in Rarotonga, I cannot refrain from drawing attention to the characteristic contribution thereto of the Hon. Mr. Ngata, whose suggestion that the white inhabitants should be deported and the Rarotongans left to themselves at once recalls to mind the adage, "If you scotch a Russian yon find a Tartar. A more simple way, perhaps, would be tomahawk the few whites there, and it is rather singular that this obvious solution of the difficulty did not occur to the hon. gentleman when the matter was being debated. MAKETAffA, The 1911 dairy season is getting alone by leaps and bounds, the Durham road creamery having to run every day on account of the heavy supply of milk. The exceptionally fine weather still continues, and log fires show up all over the pliu'e. Clearing and stumping operations are still proceeding. The grass is showing marked signs of appreciation of the mild weather. The Round the Mountain" cycle race aroused a fair amount of interest, residents from several of the bv-roads taking up positions on the Main road to look out for the travellers. Several also journeyed to Ingle-wood. No doubt the rain prevented many others from being onlookers. If the affair is made an annual one those interested can rest assured the country people will turn out to cheer the competitors on their way. • The inspector's report of the inspection of the Durham road school is in the chairman's hands, and will be duly considered at the next meeting of the school committee. From remarks made J>y the chairman, the school teacher "(Miss Foster) has obtained a very satisfactory report. The document will be commented on fully on a later occasion.
The last meeting of the Farmers' Club only drew a moderate attendance. No doubt the threatening appearance of the weather, and illness in several families, militated against a full muster. It is to be hoped member* will roll up to the next meeting, as 1 understand several matters of interest are on the card for discussion.
So far this district has escaped the epidemics of measles, etc., that are in evidence in other parts, though illness of other descriptions has visited members of families. Master Andrew Dodu-nski has been seriously ill from some internal complaint, but I am informed he is getting on splendidly at present.
