Carter, a negro who was identified "as having attacked a woman at Purcell, Oklahoma, and then set fire to her home, was burned to death by a mob in a street of the town. Three hundred persons witnessed the burning. The sheriffs attempted to protect Carter, but the mob locked them in the courthouse, tied the negro to a stake, and poured oil on his body before lighting the fire.
