TARANAKI v. WELLINGTON. THE TARANAKI TEAM. (Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night. The following team has been selected ior to-morrow's match:— Full-back, Hill j three-quarters, Stohr, Roberts, Cameron; five-eighths, McLeod and Mynott; half, Brown; wing-forward, Colman; forwards, Cain, Osborne, Young, Smith, Hawkins, Dcwar, Whittington. Emergencies: Prince and. Ward.
If the ground is wet, the team may be altered. Ait the time of wiring the weather i 9 not favorable, a mild southeaster with drizzling rain 'prevailing. The prospectß for a fine day to-morrow are therefore not good. A dry ground is wanted by Taranaki. To-day the team had a good practice on the ground, which was found to be as hard as flint.
Colman got knocked about somewhat at Palmerston, and his injuries may give him trouble. The local team is very confident of winning. Enthusiasts here are giving Wellington a win. by five points. Taranaki, however, feel quite satisfied about holding their own. They are in splendid condition, and hoive gained not a little combination, and may be depended upon "to put up a big fight. Hill, Stohr and Cameron, with a Taronaki contingent of supporters, arrived to-night. A STATEMENT DENIED. , By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchureh, Last Night. Speaking to a Press reporter to-day relative to the statement circulated that certain members of the Wanganui football team at present in Christchureh proposed to go over to the Northern Union frame, the manager of the team stated that there was no foundation whatever for the statement, for not one of the team jiropo-e<l to break his amateur status on his return from the tour.
, THE ASSOCIATION GAME (By "Ranger.") On Thursday New Plymouth met Stratford on Victoria Park. Stratford, to play off for the championship of North Ttoanaki. After a fart game New Plymouth were victorious by a margin of 4 goals to 1. Wylie scored three goals and Eggleston one, and Sehofield scored for Stratford. The game opened up with >Straford pressing, and from a penalty for ''hands" against a New Plymouth back in the penalty area, Schoflield made no mistake, notching the first and oniy goal of the first half.
A corner kick to New Plymouth was nicely placed, and Eggleston was very near scoring, but was beaten off by Wood clearing in good style. From the resumption of play New Plymouth settled down to their work better, and made things hum, and from a neat pass from Eggleston, Wylie scored the equaliser. Three minutes from the kickoff, New Plymouth were again pressing hard, and from a miskick by a Stratford back Wylie raced through and scored the second goal. Down came the forwards again, and from a pass from Sheppard, Gwillim book the ball to the line, and centred into goal. Wylie again scored with a beautiful header. After a little mi<l field play, Eggleston got away and passed to McComish, who centred back and session tricked the backs. He brought the goalkeeper out of the goal, and scored the fourth goal for Xew Plymouth. Stratford tried to rally, but were outclassed bv the defence.
Of Hie Stratford men Allen was the pick of tlie. forwards, although sadly needing a partner. Of .the halves Maicolm and Butchart were the l>est. The Stratford hacks were' a strong defence. The goalkeeper played a good game, and could not he blamed for the goals lie let through. Of the Vow Plymouth men Wylie was a good forward and n fine partner to Eggleston. Eggleston made some splendid openings for Wylie, which the latter took advantage of. Sheppiird, in a new r6le as inside left, plnved a very cool though sotunl game. Elliott, Rae and Goddard were on a: par, and all in their best form. Holmes, at hack, was easily the best back on the field. The Rev. Mr. Stent as referee gave even- satisfaction. On Thursday next Die New Plymouth Club will journey to Stratford again to play in the flunl for the Julian Cup against Manaia. From all Accounts Manaia are a very formidable team, so that a hard game may be looked forward to. The team to play against Manaia will be the same as played against stratford.
