INTER-SCHOOL DEBATE.

PALMERSTON N'OHTII v. NEW PLYMOUTH. Last evening the members of the New Plymouth High School football team entertained the two visiting teams at a social evening, which was held in Messrs. May and Arrowsmith's rooms. Proceedings opened with a debate, in which four boys, two each from the Palmerston North and New Plymouth High Schools, took part. The subject chosen was: "That Civilisation has been conducive to the Happiness of Mankind." The Patau era ton School, which took the affirmative side, were represented 'by Barraclough and Low, and the home team bv Grey and Day. AH the speeches were of a high standard, especially that of Rarraclough, who lias talents in this direction of a high order. At the conclusion of the debate, Mr. H. Eyre-Kenny, who had (been chosen to decide as. to who had brought forward the best arguments, after a most instructive and interesting speech, declared in favor of the Palmerston hoys. OtheT speeches were given by Mr. MacDiarmid, who welcomed the visitors, Messrs. Vernon (Palmerston) and Andrews (Napier) replying on behalf of their boys. Mr. FraseT also gave a speech which caused much merriment. Recitations* were given by Messrs. Wills and Barraclough, and aoncs by Messrs. Wills and Luxford, with musical items toy Mr, Box.
