TARANAKI (12) v. MANAWATU ■ (3).^ By Telegraph—Press Association; Palwerstou X., Last Night. * 'Taranaki defeated Manawatu-Horo-whenua by 12 points to 3 to-day. The game was not any thing like as one-sided as the scores would indicate; in fact, but for extremely bud luck the local men should have scored repeatedly, and were attacking for a great part of the time, while two Taranaki kicus struck the bar and bounced (back. The visitors had the advantage of the sun and vviiul in the first spell, and Roberts scored early. Then there was no* further seore till th« last few minutes of the iirst spell, when Taylor and Roberts scored tries in rapid succession. Previous to this there had been narrow escapes of Manawatu-Horo-whenua scores. In the second spell, with the advantage of the wind, Manawatu were attacking a great deal of the time. In one exciting moment Henry' Rawhiri was knocked out by striking McLeod at the corner Hag. VViniata soon afterwards got over, but the ball had been dead. Others were stopped on or near the line. Finally, Walter Winiata scored, but no goal resulted. Then Young scored for Taranaki, and the game ended with Taranaki attacking and leading by 12 points to 3. For Taranaki Mynott played brilliantly. The others were" good all round. For the losers M. Carroll was the best forward on the ground, and Martin Winiata at five-eighths was very good; Mr. E. McKenzie, of Carterton, refcreed.
SOUTHLAND v. WANGANUI. InvercargJM, Last Night. . The interprovineial match Wanganui v. Southland was played to-day in bad weather; with cold rain and wind, and the backs were thereby hampered. The wind, was in favor of 'Wanganui in the first half, but the Southland forwards made the most of their opportunities, while the backs ably assisted. McNeece scored the. only try during the game, and Martin converted. Wanganui in the ••cond' half was very near to> scoring several times, but were successfully warded off, and Southland eventually won by 5 points to nil. THE RANFURLY SHIELD. Auckland, Last Night. In the Ranfurly Shield Rugby 1 fojtball match played to-day between AuckUnd and' South Aucklands reps., Auckland won by 21 points to 5, thus retainini? the shield. Auckland had six tries and a penalty goal, and the losers one converted try. South Auckland forwards beat the Auckland pack iri the early stages, but tired, and were overrun in the last quarter.
This afternoon the New Plymouth ani Palmcrston North High Schoiol boys will try conclusions at the Recreation Ground's. This jnatch should attract a large crowd, firstly because these boys can be relied on to give a high-class exposition of scientific Rugby, and, secondly, because, while the price of admission is fixed at the nominal rate of 6d, the net proceeds are to be devoted to the Deacon Fund. Prom' private sources we learn that neither Roberts nor McLeod will be playing for Wellington against taranaki on Saturday. Their places will probably *e filled by Tilyard and Kinvig.
