Fair entries have b»en received for the various events to be decided at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club meeting at Wanganui, and the presence of several Taranaki horses should serve to make the gathering of interest to local sports.. Rawinia is engaged in the Bracelet, run over iy 2 miles on the flat, while Star Lass and Rua will probably start in the Ladies' Necklace, a two-mile steeplechase. The meeting will be run as a truly sporting one this year, the tote and bookie beiug barred,, and it remains to be seen whether the sight of horses running and jumping, with a mild bet in the way of a sweepstake thrown in, will draw people as it should do.
The North Taranaki Hunt Club meeting takes place this day week, and weights for this gathering arc due to-, day. Marton nomination* show a good sprinkling of TaraJiaki-owned horses. Among the crowd one notices: Mendip, Mulga Bill, Bowbells, St. Toney, Contralto, Kareroa, Maister Sylvia, Sandy Paul, Shining Star, Shuja, Smflax and Star Lass. Weight* are due about Friday.
From Trentham comes news that Merrivonia and Lady Kilcheran are now in work again, after a beneficial spell. The Cup candidate is said to ibe looking well, and Trainer Ayers will never stop until he has that Cup in safe keeping. A Sydney cable at the beginning of the week stated that Royal Soul t ran second to Birkenhead in the Flying at Canterbury Park. The winner was probably Blackpool, a son of the Hawke's Bay sire Birkenhead. No horse of the latter name was engaged in the race. Obsono, Advantage, Sharpshooter, Moutoa, Lady Lucy, Chief Lochiel, Gunboat and several other New Zealand-bred horses were engaged at the V.R.C. August meeting which opened on Saturday last, but as the caiblegrammer is silent, I presume they failed to show up in their respective heats. Obsono and Lady Lucy were well taken care of by the handicapper anyway. Goldfinder continues to move aiong nicely in his New Zealand Cup preparation, and all going well should be in good fettle in November next. The cabled news of Sunstar's breakdown is no surprise, as the colt broke down ]>adly in the Derby, and his connections had, some .difficulty in getting, him home after the event. Still, the Turf loses a brilliant horse, and I suppose we cannot lose our best without regret.
There is a strong movement in Australia to raise the minimum weight from (ist 71bs to 7st. In support of this the figures of the South 'Stralian J.C. show that of the seventy-six jockeys licensed by that club this season, only one can go to scale at Cst 71b, and two below 7st. Light boys are just as rare in this Dominion, and were it not that the topweights would have greater imposts than •ever, one would gladly rote for a 7st. minimum here. It is a poor horse that cannot carry 7st. The hurdler Wimmera is now in steady work at Sydney, and if the weights are not prohibitive. Mr. E. J. Watt's horse should give them a strat on the other side. Husband (reading the paper): "I see that Prince Harold is dead." Wife (an Anglo-maninc inexpressibly shocked): "Is it possible? It seems" too sad for anything. What was the cause of his death?" Husband: "Ho trotted a mile In 2min 2C>Visec, and then died of blind staggers."
>Tew Zealand horses are nil getting through good work at Randwiok, and it is expected tha Lady Medallist, Bridge, and Vice-Admiral will pick up n few races shortly.
