THE LATE MR. TAYLOR.

THE MEMORIAL. A correspondent writing to the Lyytelton Times says.-—"I have been told again and again here that the late Mr. Taylor left £15,000 or £16,000, and that it is the intention to use any money contributed to the Taylor Memorial Fund for prohibition purposes. Can you throw any light on the matter?" The letter was referred in the first instance to Mr. L. M. Isitt, who is in a position to know all the facts in regard to the late Mr. Taylor's estate. "I have had this same question put to me :• score of times lately," Mr. Isitt said. "Mr. Taylor left his family with a very slender income indeed, and at least £ 5000 is required to provide Mrs Taylor and her children with a reasonable measure of comfort. It is not pleasant to have to go into details, and I do think that the emphatic statement made by Mr. 11. W. Bishop, S.M., when it was decided to raise the fund, ought to be accepted without question." 'Mr. McCombs, secretary to the Memorial Fund Committee, endorsed what Mr. Isitt had said. Apparently the rumor that ,Mr. Taylor had left a large estate was widespread, because he had had enquiries ®n the subject from other parts of the Dominion. He could only repeat the assurance that the money was needed. As for the suggestion that the fund was intended to be used for the purposes of the prohibition campaign, the constitution of the committee ought to be a sufficient answer. The investment of the funds would be arranged by the committee, and the administration would, ho presumed, be in the hands of trustees appointed by the committee. The original resolution provided that the fund should be raised "for the benefit of those dependent on the late Mr. Taylor," and that fact hail been made perfectly clear from Mie beginning.
