BOROUGH COUNCIL.

[ MONTHLY MEETING. I The monthly meeting of the Borough. I Council was lichl last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne) presiding, and Crs. J. C. Morey, J. T. Mannix. J. Clarke, H. Stocker, W. Am|l>ury, T. Buxton, G. W. Ilartnell, and J. Buttimore. FOREMAN'S REPORT. The foreman submitted estimate for metalling Currie street from Devon street ,to GUI street with gaol metal at £l2O, and patching from Devon street to Courtenay street with gaol metal at £3O. 'file approximate cost of metalling Fillis street with gaol metal from Liardet street to a point three and a half chains in an easterly direction was £47. The maikinjj up of the footpaths and covering them with gaol gravel would cost £i) los. He also submitted his estimate of laying down a sewer from the present sewer terminus in Liardet street to Mr. Boon's 'boarding-house in Gilbert street as follows: From Liardet street to the centre of Gilbert street £92 10s, with three connections; from the centre of Liardet street to Mr. Boon's boarding-liouse in Gilbert street west, £47, with four connections. Should it be decided to carry the sewer in Gilbert street from Liardet street to Govcr street, the approximate cost would be £lO7 10s, with twenty-four connections. The formation and metalling of Bulkeley Terrace was now completed, at a total cost of £IOO 13s. The report was adopted, and all the work mentioned win be carried out with the exception of the metalling of Fillis street, a.t an estimated cost of £47. It was resolved that the footpath for three and a half chains should be keilbed and .formed at a cost of not exceeding £lO. The foreman was also instructed , to lay down at the earliest opportunity the extensions of the sewers previously authorised on Standish Hill and Barrett street. The foreman was instructed to proceed with the formation and metalling of Buller street from Eliot street to Gover street at a cost of £375, and that the •balance of the spoil be placed on Leach street. He was also instructed to embmit to the Works Committee an estimate of the cost of completing the channelling and kerbing at the corner ot 1 Devon and Weymouth streets. [ OASUAiL CARTING. Cr. Ambury brought up the question ' of carting. He said that several of the j irt ]i!yers who carried on the business . of canting were asking why the resold ti»n that the carting should be distributed among the various carters was not being carried out. From a perusal •f the accounts he noticed that, nearly all the carting was given to one man. The Council endorsed its previous reso- . lution that all casual carting should be distributed wherever possible. ; REPORTS. The reports of the various officials and committees as already published were adopted. • COMMITTEES, j The Mayor resigned his position as i j chairman of the Electric Lighting Com!mittee and Cr. Clarke waß appointed in his place. The Mayor was also appointed chirman of the following committees:— Works, Executive, Finance, Estimates, > Greater New Plymouth, Tramways, and 5 Abattoirs. i GOOD TEMPLARS' HALL. • Mr. N. T. Maunder, on behalf of the ' I trustees of the Good Templars' Hall, • drew attention to the state of the footpath at the corner of Courtenay street and Carrington road, and asked the Council to direct that it be put in order. —The Mayor said something should be done in the locality. He moved that the foreman I>e instructed to expend up to £5 in improving the corner.—This was . carried.

WATER MAINS. -Messrs. Hy. Brown and Co. asked the Council to supply water for bouses which they contemplated 'building on their sections in Hine street. As this was out of the borough, some discussion ensued. Cr. Buttimore was of opinion that in view oif the fact that this portion would soon be in the borough and that there was a likelihood of several more houses going up in the locality—in fact, ho proposed erecting several houses himself—it would toe advisable to • take into consideration the extension of I a three or four-inch main for about I three chains. He did not believe in layJ ing down %inch pipes, which -would have to be pulled up some day.—The matter was left in the hands of the Mayor and Cr. Clairke with power to act. GENERAL. The question of procuring 300 cubic yards of gravel for the work in connection with the power house extension was referred to His Worship the Mayor and the electrical engineer with power to act. The foreman will report on the cost of repairing various footpaths about which complaints were made. On the recommendation of the borough foreman, Mr. W. Kerrisk was graHted permission to remove 20 yards of earth from Pendarves street at a cost of 4d per yard. The inspector's (attention ds to be called to the barb wire fencing on Devon street west, near Mrs. Francis' shop. The Mayor and electrical engineer will report at next meeting as to the need for an extra street light in King street between Egmont street and Queen street. The town clerk was appointed valuer of the portion of Tamar street recently closed, and that it be offered at his valuation to the adjoining owner. Mr. C. Skitrop, borough (foreman, was granted permission to temporarily appoint a junior clerk to assist in the office. A letter from the North Taranaki Hunt Club, requesting that the inspector be instructed to prevent horses being tied in John street on the 31st inst., was referred to the town clerk with power to act. Mr. C. N. Johnson wrote that he was willing to replace each piece of puriri applied for and which the Council intended using for bridge work with 130 ft. of jarrab in sizes to suit requirements, leaving the ordering of same to the Council. He also intimated that Mr, Kendall considered jarrali would be equally as suitable as puriri for the work in hand.—lt was resolved to sell the puriri on payment of the value of an equivalent quantity of jarrah timber. Crs. Clarke, Movey, and Stocker, while in Wellington, will meet Mr. H. Okey, M.P., and wait on the Minister of Railways in connection with Leach street. The Council adjourned until Monday evening, when the question of the Avenue road leases will Ih> discussed.
