Councillor Jas. Clarke was n.t last night's meeting of the Borough Council appointed deputy-Mayor, and alao chairman of the Electric Lighting Committee. Mr. George Rodgers, one of the oldest inmates of the Old People's Home, whose death is reported, was a member of the 58th Regiment, and took part in the fighting in the Bay of Islands district in 1884 and 1885. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council a letter was received from Mrs Tisch sincerely thanking the. Council for its kind letter of sympathy in her sad bereavement. The knowledge that li«r dear husband's efforts for the good of the community have been so much appreciated and the widespread sympathy which had been extended to herself and family, had proved a great comfort to them in their affliction. At ft meeting of the University Council yesterday afternoon, John Kenneth Harold Inglis, professor of chemfetrv in University College, Reading, England, was appointed professor of chemistry in the Otago University, in succession to Dr. Black. Dr. Inglis wiut bora in Christchurch in 1877 and obtained the degrees of B.S.C. and M.A, at Canterbury College. He left New Zealand in 1808, and subsequently studied in Edinburgh' Leipsig, and London. He secured the degree of Doctor of Science in Edinburgh in 1900. Dr. Inglis 1 , who is unmarried, has been hend of the chemical depart-, ment at Reading for the last five years. There were 34 applicants.—Dunedin telegram. i
